  • The Witcher
  • The Queens Gambit
  • You
  • The Haunting of Hill House

  • Ratched
  • Tiny Pretty Things
  • Thirteen Reasons Why
  1. Bridgerton – The show became an instant hit on Netflix because of its diverse cast and also because of the genius of the Grey’s Anatomy producer Shonda Rhimes. The show is inspired from Julia Quinn’s 2000 book “The Duke and I”. The author gained much success for her book and went on to write seven more books on Bridgerton. The Netflix adaption of the book is also expected to do the same with the upcoming seasons.
  2. Shadow and Bone – Leigh Bardugo’s “Shadow and Bone” trilogy is a favourite of all young adults and fantasy fans. Netflix adaption of the show follows the same primary storyline, but there are a few changes made in the characters. The show remains extremely loyal to the first book in the trilogy, and the fans were gifted with an unexpected surprise with the cinematic adaptation of the book.
  3. The Witcher – Although many fans were saddened by the fact that they won’t get to see Henry Cavil as the Witcher anymore, we can still embrace “The Witcher” book series, which gave Netflix one of its top rated show. “The Witcher” series on Netflix was born from a short story written by the Andrzej Sapkowski in 1986.
  4. The Queens Gambit – Anya Taylor rose to fame with her portrayal of Beth Harmon in the show.
Walter Tevis wrote her character and her story in 1983, when he published his book with the same name. The Netflix series does full justice to the book in introducing Beth Harmon’s coming-of-age story in the male dominated 80’s.
  5. You – Joe Goldberg has a way of sneaking up on us, first as Gossip Girl and now as a serial killer. His everyday, yet mysterious character, was written by Caroline Kepnes in her book “You”, which was published in 2014. She also published two follow-up books “Hidden Bodies” and “You Love Me”.
  6. The Haunting of Hill House – The Gothic manor and its horrific life-story, which made us peep from inside our blankets, stayed as Netflix’s top rated shows for a considerable time.
The credit goes to the renowned author Shirley Jackson who published her book in 1959 by the same name. “The Haunting of Hill House” became 20th century’s best literary ghost story.
The Netflix show, although has adapted few key elements, it failed to maintain the authenticity of the book.
  7. The Hunting of Bly Manor – Despite having key connections and characters, the two shows “The Haunting of Hill House” and the “The Haunting of Bly Manor”, have been adapted from two different authors and their books. The show connects as a series, but Bly Manor was written as a series of short stories by Henry James and was titled as “The Turn of the Screw”. The work was published in 1898.
  8. Ratched – Sarah Paulson and her mysterious charm never fails to surprise us. If any reader would have to agree upon an actor who could have played Nurse Ratched, from the book “One Flew Over the cuckoo’s Nest”, then Sarah Paulson would have a unanimous vote. Ken Kesey wrote the novel in 1962, and the Netflix adaption is a prequel to the novel.
  9. Tiny Pretty Things – Nothing gets us going like a Teenage Drama and Mystery. The show did not fail to pick up the many twists and turns from the novel, which was published in 2015 by the same name, by its authors Sona Charaipotra and Dhonielle Clayton.
  10. Thirteen Reasons Why – A show which taught us a lot about bullying, suicide and general awareness, is loosely adapted form Jay Asher’s novel of the same name. However, only the first season of the show is based on the book.

In conclusion, it’s clear that books have the power to transport us to new worlds and introduce us to memorable characters. When these stories are adapted into Netflix series, they have the opportunity to reach a wider audience and capture the hearts of viewers all over the world.
